About us

Our Story

From the Royal Palace to the Nation’s Capital

The story of Taberna del Alabardero begins in 1974 in Madrid, Spain, right next to the majestic Royal Palace. It was there that our original tavern opened its doors, taking its name from the Alabarderos, the historic Royal Guard who proudly protected the Spanish monarchs.
Fifteen years later, in 1989, we brought that same regal heritage and passion for gastronomy across the Atlantic. Opening just steps away from the White House, Taberna del Alabardero has earned the distinction of being the longest-running, continuously operating Spanish restaurant in Washington, D.C. For over three decades, we have stood as a culinary landmark, bridging the history of Spain with the heart of American politics and culture.

The Experience

Authentic, Elegant, and Warm

At Taberna del Alabardero, we don’t just serve Spanish food; we transport you directly to the Iberian Peninsula.

  • Uncompromising Authenticity: Our culinary philosophy has remained unchanged since day one. We serve authentic Spanish cuisine that is fiercely faithful to the traditional flavors, techniques, and high-quality ingredients found in Spain.
  • An Imported Masterpiece: Stepping into our dining room is like stepping into a curated corner of Madrid or Seville. To maintain absolute authenticity, the vast majority of our elegant decor and furnishings were imported directly from Spain, creating an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and deeply rooted in our culture.
  • World-Class Hospitality: True to the Spanish spirit, our service is attentive, warm, and close. We pride ourselves on creating an inviting haven where diplomats, executives, celebrities, locals, and travelers alike come together to celebrate life’s milestones or simply enjoy an unforgettable meal.
